History

Three Groves Baptist Church was established in the year 1878 with the decision to build the following year. The language chosen was German. Worship and Sunday School were on opposite weeks. Electric lights were introduced in 1925. A clock was bought in 1904 and was rescued from a fire, which destroyed the building, in 1927. A bible and the church pews were also rescued from the fire.

To rebuild the church $4000 was raised. The basement was dug out by hand by the church members. The church was dedicated in 1929.

Several members are veterans and World War II claimed Elmer Phillips.

Pastors have been ordained at the church with many coming from the Mid-Western Baptist Seminary. Some pastors went into missionary work with one becoming a military chaplain.

In 1978 Three Groves turned 100 years old with a celebration. In 2003, the church turned 125 years old and was observed by some previous pastors coming to speak.

A yearly weiner roast is enjoyed and many years ago an ice cream social used to be held. Vacation Bible School was held for the community and Christmas programs brought people from around the area. The tree used to be lit with candles, with men holding buckets of water in case of fire.

Three Groves Women's Sunday School class is involved in many ministries in our area with the biggest support going to the Baptist Children's Home. Their offerings are given to them and various needs. A volunteer also sends a card to families or individuals who are in the hospital, ill, or those that have a death in the family.
